DCCC poll in the 20th CD & with caveats

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a new poll in the race between Jim Tedisco and Scott Murphy that suggests the race is tightening to 7 percentage point. We are always very, very leery of partisan polls (we didn’t do much with the RNCC’s poll from early February that found Tedisco ahead by more than 20 points), and are especially wary of the rather small sampling size (400 people) and rather chunky 4.9 percent margin of error on this one.

That margin of error means it’s statistically possible for Tedisco and Murphy to be where they were two weeks ago according to the nonpartisan poll conducted by the Siena Research Institute, which showed Tedisco up by 12 percentage points.

With that said, here are the results as collected by the Benenson Strategy Group:

This report covers the results of our tracking research: 400 interviews district-wide with likely voters for the 2009 Special Election.  The interviews were conducted February 24-25, 2009. The margin of error for overall results is ±4.9%.
