A New Narrative Emerges: Democrats Engaged in Political Triage
A new narrative appears to be emerging as Democrats continue to flail their way through the month of August with no coherent message to speak of. Reversing course, resorting to desperate actions, and attacks on one another are just some of the recent signs of a party in retreat. August was supposed to be the Democrats’ chance to turn the numbers around, but if things continue on their current course, Democrats will be in the same (if not worse) position they were when they left town; on the defensive and pointing fingers.
Make no mistake about it. Democrats are on the run.
Here are five reasons why:
- Running From Town Halls: Democrats are retreating in the face of town hall protestors after promising to go on a month-long “offensive” to build up the sagging poll numbers for their bill. (Christian Science Monitor, 8/12/09, “Lawmakers’ Priority: Avoid Town Halls”)
- Department of Bad Ideas: The President’s Organizing for America (OFA) campaign efforts appear to be backfiring on Democrat members of congress who are now pushing back. (Washington Post’s The Plum Line, 8/12/09, “Dianne Feinstein’s Office Gripes To White House About OFA-Inspired Constituent Visits”)
- White House Distances Itself from Pelosi: Nancy Pelosi’s vilification of her members’ own constituents as “un-American” even earned her a rebuke from the White House. (Politico, 8/10/09, “Obama Distances Himself from Pelosi”)
- Dems Now Cling to Voter ID: Despite unified opposition to voter ID laws, Democrats like Gene Green are now requiring identification to enter a town hall meeting. You think they require the same from their donors? (The Hill, 8/12/09, “Rep. Green To Require Photo ID At Town Halls”)
- Seniors Gone Wild: Democrats have a problem with seniors. The same crowds assembling at town halls that Dem Rep. Baron Hill calls “political terrorists” consist of a high number of senior citizens. This key demographic group that Democrats continue to dismiss are key to the 2010 election. (Politico, 8/12/09, “The Democrats’ Senior Problem”)
One added point: The poll numbers speak for themselves. President Obama’s position on healthcare is “upside down” as his approval v. disapproval on the issue sits at a dismal 43-49%. If those were his numbers as a candidate today, he would lose the election. The problem for congressional Democrats is that they lack the personality of the President and as a result they are walking on political thin ice by even CONSIDERING supporting the government-run plan that was wrestled out of committee just a couple of weeks ago.
