Pelosi’s Lapdog Spratt Gets Roasted on Healthcare Vote

South Carolinians Rally, Take Out-of-Touch Spratt to the Mat

Democrat Operatives Claim Government Healthcare Takeover Is a Political Winner, Despite Obama’s Plummeting Approval Ratings

Said a Democratic official: “If Republicans think this is a political problem for us – they’re sorely mistaken. The American people want reform and Republicans are standing in the way for the sake of partisan politics. That is a political problem for them. We are going to cause havoc for them.” (Ben Smith, “DNC targets 33 Republicans on healthcare vote,” Politico, 11/09/09)

“A double punch of persistent economic discontent and growing skepticism on health care reform has knocked Barack Obama’s key approval ratings to new lows, clouding his administration’s prospects at least until the jobless rate eases.” (“Health Care, Economy Sends Obama to New Lows in Approval Ratings,” ABC News, 12/15/09)

Recess Roasting: South Carolina Protesters: “He Can’t Call His Constituents Without Checking with Nancy Pelosi”

Protesters took to the streets Tuesday outside U.S. Rep. John Spratt’s Rock Hill office for a rally against health care reform.

Waving signs with messages such as “John Spratt is Nancy’s Lap Dog” and “Re-elect nobody,” they accused Spratt of going along with an agenda pushed by President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“He must think the people of District 5 are just like the people of San Francisco,” said speaker Joe Thompson. “Is anybody here like that?”

Eighty or so mostly older folks stood outside the downtown Gettys Center, including one person who brought a dog and another who pushed a baby in a stroller. Area conservative groups promoted the event with help from Loren Spivack, an activist who says he’s trying to turn up the pressure on lawmakers from swing districts.

“I was looking for Congressmen who voted for health care and who represent districts where the people are totally on the other side,” Spivack told The Herald. “We’re here to nationalize Spratt’s election.”

A Massachusetts native, Spivak gained notoriety after he was booted from Concord Mills mall for selling conservative-themed merchandise at a kiosk. The mall did not renew his lease.

Spratt not in town

Spratt, D-S.C., is at work on Capitol Hill this week. District director Charlie McDow came outside to watch the proceedings but did not address the crowd.

Organizers said they planned to protest in the same spot every day at noon for the rest of the week. Spratt’s office is in downtown Rock Hill at the corner of Main and Caldwell streets.

“He was raised right here in this area,” said speaker Richard Yow. “He can’t call his constituents without checking with Nancy Pelosi. We’re not California. We’re York County, South Carolina, and we’re taking a stand.” (Matt Garfield, “Dozens gather in Rock Hill to protest Spratt, Pelosi on health care,” The Herald (Rock Hill), 1/12/2009)
