Matthew Berry Advances to ‘On the Radar’
Virginia Candidate Takes Important First Step Towards ‘Young Gun’ Status
Washington- The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has officially announced Matthew Berry (VA-08) as an ‘On the Radar’ candidate, an important first step in its Young Guns program. Founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by Reps. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Paul Ryan (R-WI), the Young Guns program is a member-driven organization dedicated to electing open-seat and challenger candidates nationwide. Berry is running in Virginia’s Eighth Congressional District, a seat currently held by incumbent Democrat Jim Moran, an out-of-touch politician who seems more concerned with making outrageous statements and pursuing his own political agenda than serving the constituents he was elected to represent.
The Young Guns program is designed to assist Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives in accomplishing goals and benchmarks throughout the election cycle focused on the fundamentals of a winning campaign. By reaching ‘On the Radar’ status, Berry has proven his ability to build a successful campaign structure and achieve important fundraising goals.
“The NRCC is committed to working with Matthew Berry as he continues to meet the rigorous goals of the Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions. “Matthew’s record proves he’s an accomplished leader who will fight to create jobs and rein in government spending. I am confident that Republicans will wage a strong fight to pick up this seat held by Jim Moran, a career politician who has repeatedly put his partisan agenda before a healthy economy.”
Matthew Berry first began his career in public service when he clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as well as Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. After his service in the judicial branch, Berry joined the U.S. Department of Justice where he focused on providing intelligence and law enforcement agents with the tools necessary to fight and win a war on terror. He was integral to the DOJ’s efforts to win reauthorization of the Patriot Act and worked on legislation with the 9/11 Commission, achieving the John Marshall Award for excellence in legal performance. Berry went on to serve as Deputy General Counsel and then General Counsel of the Federal Communications Commission. Berry’s career has allowed him to see firsthand the role that the quickly evolving technology and communications sector will play in future economic growth and job creation.
Matthew Berry also remains a strong advocate against the government takeover of healthcare supported by President Obama and Jim Moran. Berry announced a 5-point plan for healthcare reform as a conservative alternative, which would reduce government intervention, lower the cost of healthcare, eliminate wasteful spending, and not impose additional costs on the American people.
Having achieved certain benchmarks to place him on the road to victory, Berry now faces a new set of rigorous goals that will help him advance to the next level of the Young Guns program and help him build a competitive, effective and winning campaign.
