Is the 24th Congressional District tilting Republican?

July 20, 2010

Another non-partisan political analyst is favoring the GOP in the 24th Congressional District race.

The Rothenberg Political Report has moved the race between incumbent Democrat Michael Arcuri and Republican challenger Richard Hanna from the “toss up” column to “tilt Republican.”

Stuart Rothenberg points to Hanna out-raising Arcuri in both the first and second quarters as the main reason for the switch.

Rothenberg says it is very possible Arcuri vs. Hanna, the sequel, could see a different ending than the original.

“Michael Arcuri’s narrow 51%-49% win over Richard Hanna in ’08 was a surprise, and Hanna is back for a re-match,” Rothenberg said. “This looks to be one of the GOP’s top two opportunities in the Empire State, and the state’s Working Families Party apparently won’t endorse Arcuri as a punishment for his vote against the Democratic health care plan.”

Arcuri campaign spokesperson, Carolyn Ehrlich, is putting her faith in the voters and not analysts.

“At the end of the day, this race is not about what Washington insiders and pollsters have to say – we learned that in 2006 and in 2008,” Ehrlich said. “It’s about new ideas, who best represents the people here, and a vision for the future.”

Neither the incumbent nor the challenger has to worry about primary battles.

The general election will be held on November 2nd.
