Abercrombie plans to resign from Congress to run for Hawaii governor

December 11, 2009

From The Honolulu Advertiser: “U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie is expected to announce soon that he will resign his seat in Congress so he can campaign full time for governor. In a post on his campaign Web site, the Hawaii Democrat said he planned to make a formal announcement on Sunday. Abercrombie’s resignation would trigger a special election to fill the remaining months of his two-year term. Former congressman Ed Case, state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa and Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou, who have announced that they would run to replace Abercrombie in Congress, now have to decide whether they will campaign in a special election. “In the nine months since I announced my candidacy I have met thousands of people across our Islands, each sharing stories of hope for the future in the face of a collapse of leadership,” Abercrombie said in a statement on his Web site. “These voices have made me more energized and focused than at any time in my career. They have made crystal clear the deep desire for change in direction for Hawaii.””
