Texas Dems Get a Visit from Their Washington Friend

August 24, 2010

FYI, a version of the release below went out to the following districts: Chet Edwards (TX-17) and Ciro Rodriguez (TX-23).
Chet Edwards Gets a Visit from His Washington Friend
Speaker Pelosi Travels to Texas to Raise Much-Needed Cash for her Texas Pal

Washington- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will travel to Texas today to attend a fundraiser for Democrat candidates like vulnerable incumbent Chet Edwards. After repeatedly laying his political career on the line and voting with the Democrat party leader 96.1 percent of the time rather than with his constituents, it comes as no surprise that Pelosi would pay him back for his unbridled loyalty. Edwards has blindly followed Pelosi’s lead, casting votes for his party’s failed $787 billion stimulus as well as the Democrats’ bloated-excuse for a federal budget. Recognizing that his career is in peril, Edwards’ Washington friend Pelosi will attempt to raise much-needed cash for what has become a bruising battle to re-election for this Texas Democrat.

“Chet Edwards’ continued rubber-stamping of Speaker Pelosi’s wildly unpopular agenda more than 96 percent of the time has put him squarely at odds with the conservative voters in his district,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “While Edwards’ Washington friend Pelosi stops in for a visit, voters should remember his unwavering loyalty for his party leaders’ runaway spending spree, which has cost Texas families and businesses greatly.”

Edwards is so entrenched in the Democrat leadership that Nancy Pelosi even touted him as her choice as a possible nominee for Vice President in 2008.

“Two years ago, Rep. Chet Edwards stood on the edge of leaping into the upper ranks of the Democratic Party as a long-shot vice presidential candidate. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi even recommended the Waco Democrat, calling him ‘an extraordinarily talented person.'”

“Pelosi continues to offer praise, with a spokesman saying she ‘has great respect for Mr. Edwards on so many levels.’ And armed with a 40-seat advantage in the House, party leaders have been able to cut Edwards loose to vote his district, experts said.” (Tom Benning, “Democrat Edwards finally vulnerable after all these years?,”  Dallas Morning News, 8/14/2010)

Even as vulnerable Democrat Chet Edwards resorts to his Washington friend Nancy Pelosi for help, it still appears as if this 20-year incumbent will be out of luck and out of a job in November.
