Target Dems' Deadly Silence on Border Violence

September 22, 2010

FYI, a version of the release below went out to the following districts: Gabby Giffords (AZ-08); Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-01) and Harry Teague (NM-02).

Kirkpatrick’s Deadly Silence on Border Violence
Why Hasn’t the Arizona Democrat Requested Hearings on Border Violence?

Washington – Ann Kirkpatrick is back in Washington, DC today. Will she continue to pay lip service to what she would do for Arizona, or will she actually take some action to keep Arizonans safe? Republicans on the Natural Resources Committee have recently requested a full committee hearing on border violence on federal lands. As Arizona’s borders become more deadly by the day, it’s unconscionable that Democrats like Kirkpatrick – who’s district would be directly affected – have failed to submit a similar request. With drug smuggling, murders and human trafficking on federal lands, Kirkpatrick has failed her duty to protect them.

“Ann Kirkpatrick’s inaction on securing border violence on federal lands is inexcusable,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Violence is increasing by the day as Arizona families deal with the very real threat of drug smuggling, murder and human trafficking. Despite the warning signs, Kirkpatrick idly sits by, letting her silence speak for her lack of concern for their well being.”

“Today, all 20 Republicans on the House Natural Resource Committee sent a letter to Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV) highlighting the recent violence and increase of criminal activities on public lands near the U.S.-Mexico border. The letter cites many media accounts of violence, crime and other illegal activities and asks for a Full Committee hearing to examine potential causes and solutions to the serious issue. Click here to read the entire letter.”

“Drug smuggling, murders, human trafficking and other illegal activities have become prevalent on America’s public lands, including National Parks, National Forests, Wildlife Refuges, and other protected areas near our Southern border. In June, the Washington Post reported that since 2006 over 23,000 people have been killed due to drug violence in Mexico—violence that is spilling into, and through, our federal lands.” (Letter to Natural Resource Committee Chairman Nick Rahall, 9/14/2010)

As violence continues to increase along the borders, will Kirkpatrick finally stand up for Arizona families or will she continue to be silent?
