Advice to Gov. Perdue: If You Want to Create Jobs, Tell McIntyre to Cut Spending
Democrat Governors Meeting with President Obama to Discuss Job Creation

Washington — As Governor Bev Perdue meets with President Obama today to discuss ways to create jobs in North Carolina, she can consider asking Mike McIntyre to reconsider voting against spending cuts. Last week, when the House took up a budget plan that made significant spending cuts, McIntyre ignored his constituents and voted against the measure. McIntyre has another opportunity next week when the House again brings to the floor a new package of common-sense spending cuts that will slash some of the debt burden on middle class families. While Governor Perdue just talks about jobs at the White House today, she should also encourage McIntyre to actually take action and vote to cut spending.

“With Governor Perdue continuing to promote job-destroying policies that impede economic growth in North Carolina, the least she can do is call on Mike McIntyre and his fellow Democrat colleagues to get serious about cutting spending and work to change the status quo in Washington,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “When given the choice last week, McIntyre decided to side with his Democrat leaders and their failed big-government policies by ignoring sound advice from experts on how to grow the economy.”

Earlier this month, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told the House Budget Committee that cutting spending would provide both immediate and long-term benefits to the economy:

“‘Acting now to develop a credible program to reduce future deficits would not only enhance economic growth and stability in the long run, but could also yield substantial near-term benefits in terms of lower long-term interest rates and increased consumer and business confidence,’ Bernanke said.” (Luca Di Leo and Michael Crittenden, “Fed’s Bernanke Seeks To Reassure Lawmakers,” Dow Jones Newswires, 2/9/11)

As Governor Perdue seeks ways to create jobs in North Carolina, she doesn’t have to look very far to see that Mike McIntyre could have helped spur economic growth last week if he had voted for the continuing resolution containing the cuts necessary to get our job-destroying debt load under control. Governor Perdue should call upon McIntyre to change his mind and finally put creating jobs in North Carolina ahead of his Democrat leaders’ political games.
