Rahall’s Budget Plan: More Taxing and Spending

Democrats’ Budget Plan Adds $1.5 Trillion in New Taxes, $9.5 Trillion in Deficits

Washington — As efforts continue to hash out a fiscally responsible budget plan for next year, Democrats like Nick Rahall seem to only offer their status quo of more taxing and spending if President Obama’s budget is any indication. In fact, Rahall’s Democrat budget plan calls for $1.5 trillion in tax increases and would add $9.5 trillion to our current record deficit levels. If his West Virginia constituents want fiscal responsibility from their representative, they will surely be disappointed as Rahall continues to side with the Democrat status quo in D.C. of taxing and spending more with no end in sight.

“The Democrat budget plan demonstrates that when it comes time for Nick Rahall and his fellow Washington Democrats to act, they will continue to fall back on their tried and true methods of taxing and spending more,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Rahall may talk big about fiscal responsibility to his West Virginia constituents, but he has yet to significantly depart from the Democrats’ new plan to add trillions in new spending and new taxes. Instead he seems poised to continue defending and protecting the Democrats’ Washington status quo.”

The CBO estimates that the Democrats’ budget plan will add $9.5 trillion to our existing record deficit levels:

“President Barack Obama’s 2012 budget would produce $2.3 trillion more in deficits over the next decade than the administration projects, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The nonpartisan agency said today the administration’s plan would generate $9.5 trillion in deficits between 2012 and 2021, compared with the $7.2 trillion forecast last month by the White House budget office.” (Brian Faler, “Obama’s Budget Underestimates Federal Deficits, CBO Says,” Bloomberg, 3/18/11)

The plan also raises taxes by $1.5 trillion:

“The budget calls for $1.5 trillion in tax increases over the next 10 years, with the bulk of that coming from allowing former President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for couples earning more than $250,000 to expire.” (Roger Runningen and Brian Faler, “Obama’s $3.7 Trillion Budget Sets Fight in Congress,” Bloomberg, 2/14/11)

With next year’s budget looming on the horizon, it seems clear that Nick Rahall’s approach will continue to be more taxing and spending instead of embracing fiscal responsibility. Surely, as the Democrats in D.C. scramble to defend their unpopular status quo, they will continue to find an ally in Rahall.
