Garamendi’s Red Tape Spree is Small Business’ Top Problem
California Democrat Has a Record of Promoting Overbearing Government Regulation that Small Businesses Say is Their Biggest Concern

Washington — Small businesses continue to say that the wave of new red tape championed by President Obama and his Washington Democrat allies is their number one problem, but John Garamendi’s voting record shows he would rather side with his party leaders than take meaningful action to create jobs. Instead of embracing common sense regulatory reform and helping small businesses create jobs for middle-class families in California, Garamendi has decided he would rather vote to support his Democrat leaders’ job-destroying policies that would make a bad economy worse.

“John Garamendi’s voting record shows that he clearly does not understand how to get California back to work,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Garamendi demonstrates just how out of touch he is with middle-class families in California after consistently supporting job-killing regulations to make life more difficult for small businesses and make a bad economy even worse.”

Garamendi has voted against numerous bills this year that would help loosen the increasing burden new Democrat-supported red tape has imposed on small businesses:
• Review of Federal Regulations (H.Res. 72, Roll Call #33, 2/11/11)
• The Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act (H.R. 872, Roll Call #206, 3/31/11)
• The Energy Tax Prevention Act (H.R. 910, Roll Call #249, 4/7/11)
• Disapproval of FCC’s Net Neutrality Regulations (H.J. Res. 37, Roll Call #252, 4/8/11)
• The Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act (H.R. 2018, Roll Call #573, 7/13/11)
• Consumer Financial Protection and Soundness Improvement Act (H.R. 1315, Roll Call #621, 7/21/11)
• Protecting Jobs From Government Interference Act (H.R. 2587, Roll Call #711, 9/15/11)
• Transparency In Regulatory Analysis Of Impacts On The Nation (H.R. 2401, Roll Call #741, 9/23/11)
• Cement Sector Regulatory Relief Act (H.R. 2681, Roll Call #764, 10/6/11)
• EPA Regulatory Relief Act (H.R. 2250, Roll Call #791, 10/13/11)
• Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act (H.R. 2273, Roll Call #800, 10/14/11)
The impact of this new wave of regulations is very real, with small businesses claiming it is their number one concern in a recent Gallup poll:
“Small-business owners in the United States are most likely to say complying with government regulations (22%) is the most important problem facing them today, followed by consumer confidence in the economy (15%) and lack of consumer demand (12%).” (Dennis Jacobe, “Gov’t Regulations at Top of Small-Business Owners’ Problem List,” Gallup, 10/24/11)
John Garamendi’s voting record demonstrates that he clearly does not understand how to create jobs for the middle-class families in California who need them. As small businesses continue to voice their concerns with excessive new regulations emanating from Washington, Garamendi has decided to continue making their lives even harder, destroying jobs in the process.
