McIntyre Rejects Multiple Bipartisan Efforts to Prevent Tax Hikes on Middle-Class Families
North Carolina Democrat Votes With Nancy Pelosi for a Tax Increase on the Middle Class

Washington — Mike McIntyre today voted against trying to achieve a workable and bipartisan solution to keep payroll taxes low on working American families. This comes after McIntyre voted to block the 130,000 jobs associated with the Keystone XL pipeline and against another complete payroll tax extension package last week (Roll Call #923, 12/13/11). Since McIntyre has blocked multiple efforts to achieve a realistic bipartisan solution, his alternative would be to raise taxes on every American worker next year instead.

“Mike McIntyre demonstrated again today that he is simply not serious about preventing tax increases that would impact every single American worker starting next year,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Instead McIntyre is standing strong with Nancy Pelosi to block 130,000 energy jobs and endanger many more with crushing new red tape that struggling small businesses say will be impossible to manage.”

Small businesses are saying the Democrats’ unserious proposal to kick the payroll tax can down the road for two months instead of extending it for a full year would be a logistical nightmare, even though they are already overburdened by excessive red-tape:

“The two-month proposal would cause logistical problems, said Isberg, who works at Automatic Data Processing Inc. but wasn’t speaking for the company. ‘System-wise, it would cause more problems than if nothing were done,’ O’Toole said…

“Smaller businesses that use off-the-shelf software or prepare pay stubs by hand would also face difficulty complying with late changes. ‘It’s a complication in the employer’s life and I think the smaller employers are the ones who are going to feel the confusion more directly,’ said Abe Schneier, a senior technical manager at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Washington.” (Richard Rubin, “Payroll Processors Fume as Congress Fiddles on Tax-Cut Extension,” Bloomberg, 12/19/11)

Even President Obama is demanding that Congressional Democrats pass the tax extension for a full year instead of simply kicking the can down the road:

“While this agreement is for two months, it is my expectation — in fact it would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle-class tax cut for the rest of the year.” (David Jackson, “Obama, GOP: Back to drawing board on payroll tax cut?” USA Today‘s The Oval Blog, 12/19/11)

But House Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi says House Democrats will not work toward a bipartisan compromise to fix their unworkable plan:

“Pelosi said she would not appoint House Democratic conferees if a conference committee was approved…” (Erik Wasson, Russell Berman and Molly K. Hooper, “House GOP to vote Tuesday on tax conference with Senate,” The Hill, 12/19/11)

Mike McIntyre voted against the Motion to go to Conference with the Senate in order to find a bipartisan compromise that would prevent tax hikes on all working Americans and avoid crushing small businesses with a sudden wave of new red tape. (H.R. 3630, Roll Call #946, Passed 229-193: R 229-7; D 0-186, 12/20/11)

Mike McIntyre is still standing in the way of any serious bipartisan proposal to prevent tax hikes on every single working family in America. Instead, McIntyre and Pelosi are trying to hide behind a two-month proposal that would be completely unworkable for small businesses in America, burdening them when they can afford it least.
