PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Democratic Boston Mayor and U.S. ambassador to the Vatican Ray Flynn is holding a fundraiser for the Republican challenger to U.S. Rep. David Cicilline.

The event to raise money for Republican Brendan Doherty is scheduled for Thursday at Patrick’s Pub in Providence. Doherty’s campaign says it marks the official launch of the "Democrats for Doherty" coalition.

Other Democrats supporting Doherty are expected to attend. They include former mayors of Central Falls and East Providence and former state legislators.

Doherty says he and Flynn are long-time friends and he’s honored to have his support. Flynn was a star basketball player at Providence College.

Doherty, former superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, is running to represent the 1st Congressional District. Cicilline is facing Democrat Anthony Gemma in the primary.
