Boren’s Stimulus Failed to Create the Promised Jobs, but Gave Billions to Tax Cheats
Oklahoma Democrat’s Plan Gave Over $24 Billion to Tax Deadbeats, but Failed to Stop Skyrocketing Unemployment
Washington — New reports continue to demonstrate how wasteful and misguided Dan Boren’s trillion dollar stimulus package was, this time revealing that over $24 billion went to companies who were tax deadbeats. As middle-class families continue to struggle with a stagnant economy, it is becoming increasingly clear Boren will have to further explain his trillion dollar mistake.
“Dan Boren’s support for the failed trillion dollar stimulus continues despite the fact that billions in taxpayer dollars went to contractors who illegally refused to pay their own taxes,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Sadly, this is simply one more example of how Boren’s spending spree only put our nation more in debt to foreign countries like China instead of helping middle-class families in Oklahoma looking for economic recovery.”
A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report revealed today that at least $24 billion in taxpayer money from the stimulus was given to federal contractors who failed to pay their own taxes:
“More than 3,700 federal contractors received $24 billion in stimulus money despite failing to pay federal income taxes, according to a report to be released today by the Government Accountability Office. The total tax liability was at least $750 million but likely much more, the GAO report says. About 35% of the unpaid taxes go back at least eight years. Investigators sampled 15 cases and found ‘abusive or potentially criminal activity’ in every case. They include an unnamed construction company that got more than $1 million despite owing $700,000 in taxes.” (Gregory Korte, “GAO report: Tax cheats received billions in stimulus funds,” USA Today, 5/24/11)
Dan Boren voted for the failed stimulus law in 2009 (H.R. 1, Roll Call Vote #70, 2/13/09).
Dan Boren is finding it increasingly difficult to defend his trillion dollar stimulus package, especially since billions in taxpayer money ended up in the hands of tax cheats who refused to pay their own taxes. Instead of helping middle-class families and small businesses in Oklahoma, Boren’s wasteful policies continue to only borrow billions a day from foreign countries like China with no end in sight.
