Will Loebsack Also Flee From Obama’s Failed Record on Jobs?
Iowa Democrat’s Colleagues Begin to Distance Themselves from Unpopular President Despite Marching in Lockstep Before

Washington — President Obama’s mismanagement of the economy has seen his approval ratings plummet, which means his fellow Washington Democrats like Dave Loebsack are in panic mode. Some of Loebsack’s colleagues in Washington are already refusing to endorse Obama for a second term, even though they loyally supported the job-crushing policies that have made him so unpopular in the first place. With his fellow Washington Democrats fleeing, is Loebsack still willing to endorse and campaign with the increasingly unpopular president?

“Middle-class families in Iowa are recognizing that Dave Loebsack and President Obama have little to offer except their same failed policies that destroy jobs rather than create them,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Does that mean that Loebsack is still willing to endorse and campaign with Obama and his failed record, or will he join his colleagues already fleeing from their own records in order to save their political careers?”

Rep. Bill Owens (D-NY) conspicuously refused to endorse President Obama yesterday, suggesting more House Democrats could follow suit:

“Rep. Bill Owens, a Plattsburgh Democrat, declined to immediately endorse President Barack Obama for re-election in 2012, saying he’ll have to ‘wait and see.’

“That Mr. Owens is holding Mr. Obama at arm’s length comes as very little surprise. The president’s approval rating is hovering at about 40 percent, his administration’s nadir.” (“Rep. Owens declines to endorse Obama in 2012,” Watertown Daily Times, 8/22/11)

This comes after Obama’s approval rating on the economy has fallen to all-time lows:

“A new low of 26% of Americans approve of President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy, down 11 percentage points since Gallup last measured it in mid-May and well below his previous low of 35% in November 2010.” (Lydia Saad, “New Low of 26% Approve of Obama on the Economy,” Gallup, 8/17/11)

And Iowa hardly an exception, with only 43% approving and 52% disapproving of the President’s job performance. (Patrick O’Connor, “Iowans Cool On Obama, Poll Shows,” The Wall Street Journal, 8/11/11)

As President Obama’s mismanagement of the economy continues to draw more ire from middle-class families across America, Dave Loebsack is in an increasingly awkward position as one of his loyal allies. Does that mean Loebsack will have to abruptly rescind his support for Obama in order to save his political career?
