Unique circumstances and a deeply unpopular incumbent have created a strong opportunity for the right Republican candidate in this Democrat strong hold.  Named by WPRI as  “one of the most vulnerable incumbents,” Congressman David Cicilline exemplifies the struggles Democrats face in some traditionally safe seats throughout New England.

CHALLENGERS

 RI-01: Brendan Doherty (R) vs. Rep. David Cicilline  (D)

First term Congressman David Cicilline emerges from his primary covered in mud and extremely vulnerable.   After running the city of Providence’s finances into the ground and leaving the city on the brink of bankruptcy, Cicilline has failed to regain the public’s trust since coming to Congress two years ago.  In fact, a Brown University poll had Cicilline’s approval rating earlier this year at a stunningly dismal 14.8%.

The odds are deeply stacked against Cicilline having survived a brutal primary fight, complete with voter fraud allegations and personal character attacks. Now he’ll have to beat a strong general election challenger, Brendan Doherty, and he’ll have to do so while defending his abysmal record as Mayor of Providence which taxpayers are still footing the bill for.  Cicilline’s refusal to make the needed difficult decisions left the city in near ruins, while rubbing salt in taxpayer’s wounds by playing hide the ball until after election day.

This election, Cicilline won’t be able to hide from the damage he’s caused Rhode Islanders, and his opponent will provide a strong contrast in both record and character.

Serving in the Rhode Island State Police for 24 years, Brendan Doherty returned as the superintendent until he retired in 2011 after receiving 24 commendations for outstanding police work. Voters know Doherty as an honest lawman who has demonstrated a true commitment to public service, and shown uncommon integrity through his public service by putting Rhode Islanders first.

District Facts: This district is made up of the eastern part of the state. Polls this year have found Doherty ahead of Cicilline.  A WPRI poll shows Doherty ahead by double digits.  The Cook Political Report rates this race as Toss Up – Likely Democrat and The Rothenberg Political Report rates it as Toss-up/Tilt Democrat.
