Six Million Americans – 2 Million More than Expected – Will Face Tax Under Barrow’s Healthcare Takeover

CBO Confirms that ObamaCare Is a Tax on the Middle Class, Will Punish Millions More than Expected with Average Tax of $1,200 Per Family

WASHINGTON — According to a new Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report, six million – up from four million – Americans will be taxed under John Barrow’s big-government takeover of healthcare (Roll Call #460, 7/11/2012). In a time when Barrow’s out-of-touch, reckless policies have made a bad economy worse, now his healthcare overhaul is set to tax uninsured families an average of $1,200 after ObamaCare takes full effect.

“It’s official – the core of John Barrow and Barack Obama’s healthcare takeover is a massive tax hike on millions of middle class families,” said NRCC Communications Director Paul Lindsay. “Every time a new study comes out about Barrow’s takeover of healthcare, another Democrat promise is broken and there’s more bad news for middle-class families.”

The CBO report says 6 million people – a 50 percent increase – will see a tax penalty, and the tax will fall predominantly on middle class families:

“Nearly 6 million Americans — significantly more than first estimated— will face a tax penalty under President Barack Obama’s health overhaul for not getting insurance, congressional analysts said Wednesday. Most would be in the middle class. …

“Average penalty: about $1,200 in 2016.” (Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, “Tax penalty to hit nearly 6M uninsured people,” Associated Press, 9/20/2012)

However, President Obama was adamant that the mandate is not a tax on American families who are already dealing with higher costs, degraded quality of care and less choices due to ObamaCare:

“’No. That’s not true, George. The — for us to say that you’ve got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase…,’ [said President Obama].” (“Obama: Mandate Is Not A Tax,” ABC News, 9/20/09)
