Meet Collin Peterson: The Driving Force Behind Obama’s Cap-And-Trade Scheme

June 26, 2013

Four years ago today, Collin Peterson voted for President Obama’s cap-and-trade scheme. The Wall Street Journal called the law one of the largest tax hikes in American history and even President Obama said his plan would cause electricity rates to “necessarily skyrocket.”

What is often overlooked, however, is just how critical a role Peterson played in the bill—turning his back on Minnesota families and the agricultural community.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “put Peterson to work” and he soon became “a leading negotiator” playing “pivotal role in securing the votes.”

In fact, Peterson played such a “major role in securing lawmakers’ support,” he even earned a shoutout from President Obama.

The bill seriously hurt farmers across Minnesota. That’s why the American Farm Bureau called the bill “seriously flawed.” Even Peterson admitted it would raise costs for consumers.

Simply put, if Peterson didn’t take charge of the bill, it wouldn’t have passed.

NRCC Comment: “Today is a shameful day for Collin Peterson. Four years ago, Peterson led the charge for President Obama’s cap-and-trade scheme, raising costs for Minnesota farmers and families. They deserve someone who will fight for them in Washington, not do President Obama’s bidding.” –Alleigh Marre, NRCC Spokeswoman

P.S. – Isn’t it a disgrace that Peterson couldn’t wrangle the votes he promised for the critical Farm Bill, yet delivered for President Obama and Nancy Pelosi on cap-and-trade?
