This Democrat Who Voted For ObamaCare Opts to Receive His Health Coverage Through His Spouse.
Ami Bera has been a strong supporter of ObamaCare since being elected to Congress. He’s voted against repealing ObamaCare, against delaying the individual mandate, and even voted to keep the IRS in charge of enforcing ObamaCare. At a town hall event Ami Bera even told voters, “under no exception should members of Congress, or their staff, be in any way exempt from the Affordable Care Act.” See for yourself:
Throughout his 2012 campaign, Bera was a strong advocate for ObamaCare and often cited his background as a physician to encourage voters to trust him with major decisions about their healthcare. With his experience as a Doctor and his countless votes in support of the law, voters would believe that Ami Bera would jump at the chance to enroll in the program.
But that’s not the case.
Not only did Ami Bera vote to allow exemptions from ObamaCare for members of Congress, but he also opts to get his own coverage through his wife’s plan because ObamaCare isn’t good enough for him:
“Scores of lawmakers won’t be affected directly by Obamacare. For example, nearly 30 percent of members of Congress are 65 or older, making them eligible for Medicare. And lawmakers including …Ami Bera (D-Calif.) will be covered through their spouses.” [Politico, 12/8/13]
But, Bera is a little shy about sharing that news. When the Washington Post did a survey to see which Members of Congress were planning to obtain the healthcare they were requiring American families to use, Bera chose not to share that information.
“It’s no surprise Ami Bera is such a strong supporter of ObamaCare – he’s exempt himself from the canceled plans, higher premiums, and lost wages. While California families struggle to find quality insurance, Ami Bera is playing by his own set of rules.” – Alleigh Marré, NRCC Spokeswoman
