Meet the Maine Democrat Who Wants to Repeal Rest of Bush Tax Cuts

June 11, 2014

Now that Democrat Emily Cain has advanced to the general election for Maine’s 2nd Congressional district, she is going to have to explain to voters why she wants to impose on them a tax hike so massive that even most Democrats voted against it.

Cain declared in a debate on May 7th that she wanted to get rid of what is left of the Bush tax cuts. Obviously those tax cuts were extended by a bipartisan vote in January of 2013 for families making less than $450K and individuals making less than $400K. But Cain reopened the debate by saying that she wants to get rid of the rest of the cuts.

What would repealing the rest of the cuts do? Check out the graphic below for a quick primer. Needless to say, it would be a massive tax hike on the middle class which is why no one advocates for it.

No one except Emily Cain.

NRCC Comment: “Emily Cain is going to have to spend the next several months explaining why she wants to impose a massive tax hike on Maine’s middle class families. In fact, according to Cain’s proposal, Mainers or all income levels should be subject to higher tax rates, receive fewer tax breaks, and have reduced tax incentives for higher education and retirement savings.” – NRCC Spokesman Ian Prior
