Rick Nolan still wants to ignore ISIS

March 13, 2015

As Americans increasingly worry about the threat posed by ISIS, Rick Nolan made it clear he continues to oppose any military action to slow the growth of extremism. At a recent speech, Nolan naively and unequivocally said the US should not get involved in overseas conflicts and let “those countries” solve their own problems. This rhetoric is consistent with Nolan’s past assertions that the US should not engage ISIS (Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C), even though the group has proved more dangerous than initial estimations.ostrich-in-sand

Most alarming is that Nolan seems unwilling to acknowledge the threat terrorists who operate overseas pose to his country and his constituents. Perhaps Nolan forgot that ISIS beheaded two American journalists? Or that al-Shabaab threatened the Mall of America just last month?

Apparently Nolan believes that unless our shores are directly attacked, we have no moral or strategic imperative to act. In Nolan’s mind, even atrocities such as mass murder, enslaving and sexually abusing women and children, beheading homosexuals, or the execution of the mentally ill don’t warrant any sort of response from the United States. Have none of these caused Nolan to rethink his position?

NRCC Comment: “Rick Nolan’s extreme views on foreign policy don’t reflect the growing concerns of millions of Americans and show a troubling naivety about threats facing the United States. Violence overseas is still a threat to our shores, and 8th District families should demand that Nolan take those evolving dangers seriously.” – NRCC Spokesman Zach Hunter
