Is John Garamendi Hoping for Another Round of Military Base Closures?
President Barack Obama vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), but John Garamendi has yet to publicly commit to vote to override his veto and ensure authorization of funding for our national defense. Ultimately, if Garamendi does not stand up to the president, another round of Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) reviews could go into effect. That means military bases all over the country would be subject to review and potential closure.
“By not standing up to President Obama’s veto, John Garamendi has all but endorsed the President’s reckless actions,” said NRCC Communications Director Katie Martin. “If Garamendi does not step up, another round of BRAC reviews could threaten local economies and cost local jobs.”
The NDAA is critical in ensuring that the men and women of our military and their families receive the funding they have rightfully earned. The bill also includes a provision that prevents a new round of BRAC reviews, opening the door to the closure of military bases all across the country.
The NDAA passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 270 to 156. It passed the Senate by a vote of 70 to 27.
