VIDEO: Is LuAnn Bennett cheating on her income taxes?
January 6, 2016
Last night at a Fairfax County Democrats event, LuAnn Bennett was asked if she pays Virginia or Washington, DC taxes. She answered by saying, “Virginia, always, 35 years.”
That’s curious since she bought a $1.35 million condo at the DC Ritz-Carlton on February 4, 2014.
She also posted on Facebook that she moved to DC on April 1, 2014.
Bennett’s company, Bennett Group, is also located in DC at 1230 31st Street, NW.
According to the DC Office of Tax and Revenue, you have to file a DC income tax return if “you lived in the District of Columbia for 183 days or more during the taxable year, even if your permanent residence was outside the District of Columbia.”
Bennett says she has always paid Virginia taxes. That means she must be living outside of DC for 183 days a year to avoid DC taxes. For example, at her 100 acre estate located in VA-05 at 3252 Winchester Road, in Delaplane.
That means 183 nights a year, LuAnn Bennett doesn’t commute the seven tenths (0.7) miles from her business to her condo at the Ritz-Carlton…
…to instead drive 52.0 miles one way in DC rush hour 183 days per year.
NRCC Comment: “LuAnn Bennett says she pays her taxes in Virginia and not DC, which means she must live in the Commonwealth at least 183 days a year. Bennett should explain to the people of VA-10 what exactly her living situation is because it is hard to believe that she would drive 104 miles daily for over half the year to adhere to DC tax law.” -NRCC Spokesman Chris Pack
