The Tax Cut Before Christmas

December 19, 2017

‘Tis the week before Christmas, and all through the House

The GOP’s passing middle class tax relief, for individuals and their spouse

But in 2018, grinchy Democrats will get coal in their stocking

From voters angry that lowering rates, they’ve been blocking

So as Republicans return home with the gift of tax cuts and good cheer

The NRCC is ready to make this case against Democrats all next year.

Today – the week before Christmas off all weeks – Democrats voted against the historic Middle Class Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, denying their constituents:

  • A tax cut of $2,059 for a family of four earning the median family income of $73,000
  • Lower rates for individuals, setting rates at 0%, 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%
  • A nearly doubled standard deduction – from $6500 and $13,000 under current law to $12,000 and $24,000 for individuals and married couples
  • An expanded Child Tax Credit – from $1,000 to $2,000
  • An expanded medical expense deduction for medical expenses exceeding 7.5% of adjusted gross income
  • A simplified tax code that can be filed on a postcard

“Grinchy Democrats who stood in the way of this historic middle class tax cut will be punished with more than just coal in their stockings. Republicans’ New Year’s Resolution for 2018 is simple: make Democrats pay for refusing to cooperate on the much-needed relief we’ve delivered today.” -NRCC Spokesman Jack Pandol
