NRCC’s Matt Gorman Highlights CA-39, CA-49, MN-08, and NV-03 Young Gun Candidates
WASHINGTON – NRCC Communications Director Matt Gorman joined Fox News’ Dana Perino to highlight key candidates the NRCC recently added to its “Young Guns” program.
PERINO: Let me ask you then, tell me a little bit about Young Kim. That’s a race that I have been keeping my eye on out there in California, running for the open seat that Ed Royce is vacating.
GORMAN: Yeah, Young Kim is a phenomenal candidate. We are super excited about her candidacy down in southern California. As you said, she is running to replace Ed Royce, who was her former boss. She ran his district operations, so has really strong ties to that district. She’s also served in the California State Assembly. She would be the first Korean American woman ever elected to Congress if she wins in the fall.
PERINO: What about Diane Harkey, another woman that you have recruited to run for Darrell Issa’s seat?
GORMAN: Yeah, Diane is a longtime fixture in California politics: the Board of Equalization, the state assembly, former Mayor of Dana Point. She is a great candidate. Make no mistake, that district can be extremely competitive in the fall with Congressman Issa retiring. We’re glad that Diane Harkey is carrying our mantle in that district. We confirdent both her and Young Kim are going to be a pair of women coming out of southern California and into D.C. in the fall.
PERINO: Take me out of southern California and up to Minnesota – you have Pete Stauber. Tell me about him up in Minnesota running in Rick Nolan’s open seat, that is a Democrat that is retiring.
GORMAN: That’s correct. He is was originally and Pete jumped in the race he might have scared him out of it, but that’s up in the Iron Range, where President Trump just visited. Pete is a County Commissioner up there, but he is also a police officer, who was shot in the line of duty. He also was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings coming out of college, a former pro hockey player. And Pete is talking a lot about the issue of mining in the district. That’s a big issue up there and it’s a way that he could unite both Republicans and some swing Democrats on bringing them over to his side as well.
PERINO: Now let’s go back to Nevada. That is a state that’s going to get a lot of attention from President Trump and all the Democrats this year and certainly in 2020 and you have Danny Tarkanian running there.
GORMAN: Yeah, President Trump exactly was just in that district. That’s a district President Trump won and Danny Tarkanian ran that race in 2016, came up about within a point, so it’s a very close race. He’s back again against a candidate who is quite flawed in Susie Lee. We are confident that Danny is a well-known commodity in that district and that he could pull it off.
