NEW: Oregon’s Biggest City Struggles to Cut Homicide Rate after Defunding Police

August 22, 2022

The Wall Street Journal reports that Portland is struggling to bring down violent crime.

They write, “Portland was long among the safest cities in the country, averaging about 21 homicides a year from 2000 through 2019. Then 2020 brought the pandemic, as well as protests for cuts in police funding that were frequently accompanied by looting and property violence.”

The Portland City Council cut $15 million from police after pressure from Democrats, and homicides jumped to 57 and then to 88 in 2021.

Will Oregon Democrats Val Hoyle, Jamie McLeod-Skinner, or Andrea Salinas denounce their party’s “defund the police” movement and stand up for the safety of Oregonians?
