NYT: In Fight for Congress, a Surprising Battleground Emerges: New York

October 11, 2022

The New York Times reports New York is an unexpected key battleground for the House majority.

Thanks to dynamic candidate recruits and Democrats’ unconstitutional gerrymander backfiring, Republicans are competing for more seats in New York than almost anywhere else in the country.

Here’s a look around the map:

  • On Long Island, “Republicans are increasingly confident the…issues of crime and inflation will help them hold” NY-01 and NY-02, while making serious efforts to flip NY-03 and NY-04 with George Santos and Anthony D’Esposito
  • On Staten Island, “national Democratic strategists have concluded there is almost no viable path to victory for” Max Rose.
  • In the Hudson Valley, “Republicans are making serious runs at three seats held by Democrats.” This includes NY-18, NY-19, and DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney’s new district, NY-17, where he faces “a viable challenge, with internal polls from both parties showing a dead heat in a suburban area President Biden won by 10 points.”
  • In Central New York, Republicans are poised to hold NY-22 as public polls show Republican Brandon Williams leading liberal swamp creature Francis Conole.

NRCC Comment: “Republicans are well-positioned for significant wins in a deep-blue state like New York because extreme, out-of-touch Democrats have failed voters on every front, from rising prices to surging violent crime.” – NRCC Spokeswoman Samantha Bullock
