Bloomberg: New York, New England Ration Heating Oil Even Before Peak Winter

October 24, 2022

The Northeastern U.S. is so short on heating oil that the fuel used to power home furnaces is being rationed even before peak winter, Bloomberg reports.

As wholesalers put retailers on allocation, giving them a limited amount of fuel based on availability, that rationing is being passed on to customers who are then “in shock” about the price to fill up their heating oil tanks.

And “[i]n New England, where more people burn diesel…to warm their homes than anywhere else in the country, stockpiles are a third of typical levels for this time of year.”
