Val Hoyle’s crooked scheme
April 27, 2023
Questions are mounting about Val Hoyle after a bombshell report in Willamette Week revealed Hoyle backed illegally directing over half a million dollars to a program run by a major donor to her campaign.
- Hoyle awarded $554,000 in taxpayer funds to a nonprofit run by La Mota CEO Rosa Cazares to launch an apprenticeship program that planned to train just four people.
- The nonprofit “had no evident track record in job training—or of performing any work. Nevertheless, then-Oregon Labor Commissioner Val Hoyle called it an ‘important investment’ and vouched for the program.”
- Cazares and her partner donated over $26,000 to Hoyle’s campaign prior to Hoyle awarding the grant to Cazares’ nonprofit.
- Hoyle’s successor revoked the award because the program “couldn’t legally launch.” Hoyle refused to answer “whether she knew when her administration approved the grant that the program could not be registered.”
“Val Hoyle’s crooked dealings have all the telltale signs of corruption. Val Hoyle must be held accountable for her role in directing over half a million in taxpayer funds to this scheme.” – NRCC Spokesperson Ben Petersen
