House Speaker Mike Johnson brought the fight for control of Congress to Iowa on Thursday, arguing that one of the nation’s most closely watched House races could determine whether Republicans keep their majority.

Campaigning alongside U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Pella, Johnson said Iowa’s 1st Congressional District is central to the GOP’s strategy heading into November’s midterm election.

“This House majority runs through Iowa’s 1st District,” Johnson said.

Much of Thursday’s event centered on public safety, with Johnson criticizing Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan over her opposition to Iowa’s Back the Blue Act.

Johnson said Bohannan “called protecting police officers ‘dangerous and disturbing,'” referencing her comments on the legislation.

Bohannan’s campaign disputed that characterization.
